In 2020, one hundred years after the Self-Strengthening Movement succeeded, the Qing dynasty rules a smartphone empire in dragon robes — and the White Lotus preaches that this whole shining era, the Red Sun, must burn away to white.
The hinge
The Mandate of Heaven is a real, physical current. Dynastic fortune and human gifts both draw from it: it tipped the 洋務運動 (Self-Strengthening Movement) into total success under Emperor Xuantong — so the Qing never fell — and it still surfaces in a handful of sun-touched people whose gifts are always paid for in flesh. The White Lotus reads this current as the turning of Three Suns: the pure Azure Sun era (青陽) is gone, the sinful Red Sun era (紅陽) is now, and the White Sun era (白陽) must be ushered in.
What it cannot do
The sun-touched are vanishingly rare — a handful alive at once — and every gift exacts a proportional price: 紅如's eyes fail exactly as his power grows; 繘's gifts could be chemically suppressed for years.
The current cannot raise the dead, stop a bullet, or disarm a warhead; it bends fortune and flesh, never physics wholesale.
Prophecy names roles (彌勒轉世, the twin omen), never outcomes — every faction still reads it to suit itself.
Blood, drugs and ritual can carry the current a short way (紅如's blood heals and frees), but the effect is personal, slow, and cannot be bottled or mass-produced.
The Mandate favors no one forever: the same current that saved the dynasty in 1920 is the one the rebels claim is turning against it now — and no one alive can measure which reading is true.

Twin sons are born to Emperor Minghui. The elder is proclaimed crown prince 祺萸; the younger, 繘, is recorded stillborn and carried the same night to 落魂堂 under the Suppressant Pharmacopoeia.
On paper, mercy; in fact, a spare — kept drugged, taught war by a disgraced general, raised in English as royal custom demands. In a western county the same year, a girl is born with a lotus-shaped mark at the nape.
2008
The western drought breaks records; white banners reappear at night burials. The Suppression Edict is renewed.
Hunger does the recruiting. The sect's altars begin to fill a generation after they emptied.
2010
A four-year-old girl in a western county is found to bear the white-lotus birthmark. 紅如 arrives to verify it within the week, takes charge of her upbringing, and rises to 上上師 (Supreme Grandmaster) on the strength of the omen — and of his own priced gifts.
The prophecy acquires a face. She is dressed as the Maitreya reborn before she can read, taught to stand and sit and answer correctly, and every correction is delivered as 我是為你好.
2019
Emperor Minghui is assassinated in the Forbidden City by 焱刃 (Yanren) with a technique the guard reports cannot describe.
The precor. The court announces illness, schedules the coronation for the centennial year, and begins asking how a blade got that far in.

At the live-streamed coronation, 焱刃 kills crown prince 祺萸 point-blank. Within days the court presents 'the crown prince, recovered from light wounds' — the twin fetched secretly from 落魂堂 — and completes the rite.
The empire believes in a miracle; three people know it was a swap. The new emperor's first council is the suppression of the White Lotus.

PRESENT DAY. The Grandmaster has the merchants' quiet money, the farmers' open faith, and a ward he is spending like capital. The emperor has the throne, the army, and the 龍淵 button.
Everything after this line is the musical's second half, and has not happened yet.
Geography
The Great Qing in 2020 spans the old eighteen provinces and the frontier khanates, ruled from 燕京 (Yanjing). Glass towers stand behind vermilion palace walls; high-speed rail runs where courier horses ran; the western provinces, poor and drought-worn, burn with white fire.
燕京 · The Forbidden City. Seat of the throne. The coronation edict still descends from Tiananmen in a golden phoenix's beak (雲盤接詔) — now watched live on every phone screen in the empire.落魂堂 Luohun Hall. A ruined mountain temple where GPS dies and novices answer no questions. For fourteen years it held one chained mixed-blood boy, guarded by warrior monks and a broken ex-general.白蓮祭壇 · The White Lotus Altar. In the famine-bitten west: white fire, white silk ribbons, white banners. Here a fourteen-year-old in ceremonial splendour blesses forty thousand kneeling faithful, in robes chosen for her before she could read.養生殿 · Hall of Mental Cultivation. Where the young emperor takes the suppression council — and where, in an older century, other emperors also decided which relatives were too dangerous to exist.

Peoples
旗人 Banner families. The Manchu banner aristocracy, now ministers, officers and licence-holders of the industrial guilds. They prize lineage, ritual precision, the appearance of calm. Royal houses deliberately marry into 'strong cultures' and raise children in their languages — which is why a Qing prince weeps in English. It began as a Xuantong-era policy: absorb what defeated others.漢族士商 Han scholar-merchants. The guild class of Yanjing and the coastal cities — classically schooled, globally banked. They prize solvency, respectability, hedged loyalty. The 京城商會 (Capital Merchants' Guild) donates to temple restorations in the west 'for merit' — quiet insurance with the White Lotus, itemized in no ledger.西省信眾 The western faithful. Drought-poor farmers and miners of the western provinces, the White Lotus's forty thousand — and growing. They prize the coming White Sun, the Holy Maiden, deliverance. They tie a white ribbon at the wrist of every newborn 'so the White Sun will know its own' — a habit the census bureau quietly maps as rebellion data.

Law
The Son of Heaven rules through the 軍機處 (Grand Council) and the boards, legitimated by edict and rite rather than ballot. A century of technological success is offered as standing proof that the Mandate holds — which is precisely why every failure of order must be treated as theology, not crime.
取締邪教令 · Heterodox Sect Suppression Edict (1911, renewed 2008) — The White Lotus autumn rising of 1911 nearly became a revolution; it was crushed, and 'gathering under white banners' has been a capital offense ever since. Renewal in 2008 followed the western drought — hunger recruits faster than doctrine.
禁槍令 · The Firearm Prohibition — Only banner guard and licensed troops may bear firearms. A century of order made the gun a state monopoly — which is why a single pistol at a coronation was unthinkable enough to succeed.
禮播法 · The Broadcast Rites Act — All live transmission of court ritual passes through the Board of Rites' seal, with a mandated delay — instituted after an early broadcast caught an imperial stumble and the Mandate was mocked in teahouses for a season. The 2020 coronation went out live by the new emperor's own vain insistence; the empire therefore watched the assassination in real time.
抑藥典 · The Suppressant Pharmacopoeia — The Imperial Household holds a lawful right to medicate 'inauspicious' members of the clan. Twin births in the direct line are read as an omen of split Mandate; the law exists so that what was done to the second twin at 落魂堂 was, on paper, care.
封山條例 · The Sealed Mountains Ordinance — Certain mountains are erased from public maps and their airspace and signal coverage denied — officially to protect sacred sites; actually to hide what the dynasty stores or imprisons in them. It is why GPS dies on the road to Luohun Hall.
Seats of power
軍機處 The Grand Council. The army's loyalty in fact, the 龍淵 protocols in part, and the file on everyone. Inside: Pragmatists around the old fox of the Board of War — the unnamed veteran who warned the sect that 'a trouble' waited at 落魂堂 — against legitimist officers who would die for the throne without asking which boy sits on it. It breaks if: It runs on a handful of very old memories. So does the swap.
內務府 The Imperial Household. The palace's bodies, medicines and archives — everything the dynasty must both keep and deny. Inside: Stewards who serve the reigning face against clerks who serve the paper trail. It breaks if: Its power is proof, and proof is flammable: the 2006 stillbirth certificate and the 2020 recovery bulletin are in the same clerk's handwriting.
禮部與廣播司 Board of Rites & Broadcasts. The Mandate's public face: every rite, every stream, every seal and delay. Inside: Ritualists who fear the camera against modernists who fear irrelevance; the live coronation was the modernists' triumph and their catastrophe. It breaks if: It broadcast the assassination to four hundred million witnesses, and must now narrate a miracle it cannot explain.
龍淵核司 The Dragon Abyss Command. The arsenal under the sealed mountains; the era's final argument. Inside: Those who believe the button answers to the throne, and the smaller number who know which counter-signatures the protocols actually require. It breaks if: A command chain built for a wise old emperor now terminates in a fourteen-year-old with abandonment issues — and the 白蓮宗 knows the sealed mountains better than the maps do.
白蓮宗壇系 The White Lotus Altar Network. Forty thousand sworn faithful, the ribbon tithe, the western roads. Inside: Altar-masters who believe the doctrine literally against the Grandmaster's operatives who run the logistics; the pious wing has begun asking why the saint is never allowed to speak unprompted. It breaks if: Its miracle is a payroll and its saint is a fourteen-year-old who has never believed in herself. One honest sentence could end it — which is why 焱刃's honesty to 蓮 is the turning of the whole plot.
落魂堂 Luohun Hall. One ruined mountain compound, its warrior monks, and the most dangerous medical ledger in the empire. Inside: A Buddhist lineage that took imperial silver to hold imperial embarrassments, and the disgraced general it appointed as warden — who taught his prisoner the art of war so the boy would one day be worth freeing. It breaks if: The warden logged every dose and every visit, including a white-haired pilgrim's bleeding wrist. The ledger is his insurance and his confession.
京城商會 Capital Merchants' Guild. Import charters, the phone monopoly, grain futures on the western famine. Inside: A chairman who shook the Grandmaster's hand in a mountain teahouse against a younger generation that thinks the hedge is a fuse. It breaks if: Guild silver moved sect personnel by chartered rail during coronation week. The manifest exists.
Faiths
白蓮宗 The White Lotus (Three Suns teaching). 青陽 is lost, 紅陽 is now and corrupt, 白陽 must come; the Maitreya reborn will lead the crossing. 眾生一念心性具足三千萬法，故心迷則所住之土穢，心淨則所居之土淨。 Rites: White fire, white ribbons, the 眾生一念 / 心性具足 call-and-response, the Holy Maiden's blessing. Followers: Forty thousand sworn in the west; sympathizers wherever the drought reached. It rejects the hinge's present reading outright: the same Mandate the throne cites as proof, the sect reads as indictment. The state cannot crush it without seeming to fear the reading — and one wing of the sect (its own Grandmaster) has decided that if the White Sun cannot be ushered in, it can be detonated.
State Orthodoxy (儒教 imperial cult). The Mandate is visible in order and success; a century of both is the dynasty's scripture. Rites: The coronation liturgy, the phoenix and cloud-tray descent of edicts (雲盤接詔), the examination cult. Followers: The charter belt, the ministries, everyone the system feeds. Its proof-by-success logic works exactly until success wavers — a live-streamed assassination was the first crack four hundred million people watched at once.
The Discarded Orders (落魂堂 Buddhism). Take what the palace sends, ask nothing, sweep the courtyard. Rites: Silence, sutra, the education of prisoners. Followers: Few, mountain-bound, load-bearing. It holds the empire's worst secrets as an act of compassion, and thereby keeps every lie alive.
Economy
Currency: 龍元 lóngyuán (the dragon yuan), paper and phone-ledger both; temple donations move in white silk ribbons, one ribbon one blessing.
Guild-chartered industry under banner licences: the throne grants monopoly charters, the guilds deliver rail, grid, shipyards and phones, and both sides call the arrangement the Mandate working as designed. The western provinces, outside the charter belt, sell grain, ore and sons.

A day in the life
Morning. Queues braided, robes fastened, phones checked: the court gazette app pushes the day's auspicious hours beside the metro delays. In the west, the faithful tie fresh white ribbons before the fields.
Food. Lane-shop noodles under red lanterns in the capital; millet and drought-cabbage in the west, where a temple bowl of rice does more recruiting than any sermon.
Work. Guild offices hum under portraits of Xuantong the Perfecter; civil examinees drill the classics and grid engineering in the same cram schools; censors watch the livestream comment scrolls the way earlier censors read wall posters.
Night. The capital glows vermilion and gold; screens replay the coronation edict. In the west the night glows white, and the chant 眾生一念 carries farther than the state radio.
Live tensions
A guardian spending the child he raised as prophecy, against a boy-emperor spending an empire as bait — and both of them privately want a person, not a victory.
The swap: the throne's legitimacy is one honest sentence deep, and the people who can say the sentence are the rebellion's employer, a terrified steward, and an old monk with a ledger.
The west vs. the charter belt: a century of the Mandate's success, priced in the provinces that never saw it — hunger is the sect's best recruiter and the court's blind spot.
The button: an eschatology that reads annihilation as purity is one command chain away from proving itself right.
The succession
The throne is occupied by a secret: the discarded twin reigns under his dead brother's name, crowned by a council faction that needed a living miracle within a week. His legitimacy is perfect in public and nonexistent in fact — three people can unmake it with a sentence, and one of them commands the rebellion's blade.
愛新覺羅·繘 (as 祺萸). Claim: Possession: crowned, sealed, broadcast, adored. Backing: The Grand Council's pragmatists, the Household's terrified silence, the army's legitimists (unknowing). Fatal weakness: A medical ledger at 落魂堂 and a steward's handwriting — and the fact that the person he wants cannot be ordered to come back.
蓮 Lian, the Maitreya reborn. Claim: Cosmological: the White Sun's saint, birthmarked, prophesied. Backing: Forty thousand faithful, and the whole apparatus of the man who raised her. Fatal weakness: She is fourteen, she has no powers, and she has never once been asked whether she wants it — a claim owned entirely by other people.
軍機處 The Grand Council (regency by fact). Claim: None declared; it merely holds the protocols, the proof and the army. Backing: The file. Fatal weakness: Its senior men are very old, and both instruments they dealt — the boy they crowned and the Grandmaster they warned — have stopped being instruments.
The flashpoint: The siege of the Forbidden City: the moment the White Lotus reaches the walls, every secret must be spent at once — the wheelchair, the legalization offer, the second assassination, and the button.
Shadows
Where did 蓮 come from? Known: A four-year-old girl in a western county, a birthmark at the nape, and a Grandmaster who arrived to verify it within the week. Her family's name is in no register the sect keeps. Feared: That the mark was not found but made — and that somewhere there is a woman who has spent ten years looking for a daughter the White Sun took.
The Grand Council's true game Known: The Board of War warned the sect about 落魂堂, and the same men then staffed the swap that came out of it. Both sides of the coming war were armed by one office's information. Feared: That there is no side it is on; that 社稷 in its mouth means the file itself, and every living player is expendable to the file's continuity.
The price of Hongru's blood Known: It heals, frees addicts, and costs him sight in proportion to power spent. Feared: That total blindness is not the end of the price — the sect's oldest texts say the sun-touched 'burn down to their gift'; what remains of a man who spends everything may be the gift, walking.
The 龍淵 protocols Known: The button exists; the chain of command is classified; the mountains that hold the arsenal are the same sealed western mountains the sect knows best. Feared: That the protocols have a hole shaped like a man who is trusted by both sides — and that the White Sun's final reading of 'purity' was always going to be spelled with it.
The slow threat: eschatology as engineering Known: The Three Suns doctrine reads annihilation as purification. It is a belief, held by forty thousand. Feared: That belief plus a warhead is a design document. The existential threat to this world is not a faction winning — it is one gentle, going-blind man deciding the Red Sun deserves to end rather than continue unjust, and calling the flash 白陽.
Prophecies
“有影子的地方就有光。(Where there is shadow, there is light.)”
The faithful hear a promise: the darker the Red Sun era, the nearer the White. the doctrinal wing hears a warning about the speaker: the man who says it stands in the shadow and calls himself the light. The Old Fox, told of it, filed it under both.
“雙日不同天。(Two suns cannot share one sky.)”
The court reads it as the throne vs. the false Maitreya — one must fall. The sect reads it as 紅陽 vs. 白陽 — one era must end. A third reading, spoken by no one aloud, notices that the dynasty currently has two suns of its own, and only one of them is buried.
“當白蓮開在雪上，無生老母將親手熄燈。(When the white lotus blooms on snow, the Unborn Mother will put out the lamps with her own hand.)”
The faithful: the saint will end the age of false light and lead them home. The suppression bureau: a coded operational order for winter. Neither reading survives contact with the literal one — a bare, scoured earth in 2021, lit by nothing at all.
The musical
青陽白陽 · Azure Sun, White Sun — stage musical
A guardian tries to win the world for the girl he raised to be its saint — a fourteen-year-old who never asked for the prophecy and cannot decide whether she loves him or is simply used to him. A discarded twin takes his dead brother's throne to make the one man who ever saved him come back and beg. The emperor uses them both and wins everything; the guardian, rather than let an unjust era continue, ends the world — and calls it purity.
Precor. 紫禁城 — 焱刃 assassinates the reigning emperor with a technique no witness can describe.
第一幕 刺客 (The Assassin)
The 2020 coronation, Forbidden City, broadcast live
Heralds perform the full 雲盤接詔 rite; the edict names a century of triumph — 宣統皇帝師夷長技終制夷 — and a troubled year: 白蓮邪教自西而起，禍往東方. The procession chants 應天受命 / 黃袍加身 / 出震繼離 / 登庸納揆 in cascading call-and-response. Spotlit and utterly alone in the pageant, the 14-year-old crown prince sings 《都一樣》 — nothing is remarkable, everything is foreordained. A man in black carves through the procession with hard, agile kung fu, mounts the palanquin mast, and looks down: cruel calm meets all-knowing indifference. A gun to the forehead. A shot. Chaos. Curtain.

第二幕 落魂堂 (Luohun Hall)
A deep-mountain temple where GPS dies
Hongru — half-Daoist dress, hiking gear, iPhone — is stonewalled by novices ('此地什麼都不知道，什麼都不說的人，也未免太多了吧?'). He finds the chained mixed-blood boy: adorable by day, withdrawal-wracked by night. He feeds the boy his own blood, daily. '為什麼這樣做?' '你剛好需要我，我剛好在這裡，順應自然罷了。' Yanren arrives days later, defeats every warrior monk, finds no abbot. Hongru leaves; the farewell — '為什麼拋棄我?' '我剛好要離開，你剛好不能離開，順應自然罷了。我曾經幫助過你，比從來都沒有幫助過好吧。' The boy wails at his receding back.

第三幕 白蓮宗 (The White Lotus Sect)
The western altar: white fire, white ribbons, white banners
蓮, fourteen, in ceremonial splendour, blesses the roaring congregation — 眾生一念 / 心性具足. 紅如 watches smiling from the shadows, prostrates with the crowd, then presents himself: '屬下紅如，參見教主。' For one unguarded second she is a girl who has missed someone: she comes down the dais too fast, forgets the ritual pause, and says only '你可算回來了。' He straightens her hem and returns her to the office — '無生聖女不會想念任何人。心淨則所居之土淨。站要有站相，坐要有坐相。' …'我是為你好。' She looks away with the particular flatness of a child who has been corrected in public for ten years and has learned that arguing extends it. He reports the coronation kill made under her 無上法力 ('So he got shot and died?' — a shrug she has practised); she knows better than anyone that she has no powers, and says nothing, again. His creed: the Azure Sun is gone, this is the sinful Red Sun, she is the Maitreya reborn who will lead four hundred million to the White. In the bar afterwards: 焱刃's certainty, the Board of War's warning about 落魂堂 — and then Breaking News: 皇太子傷愈，登基大典已於今日上午繼續完成. 焱刃 stares at the prince he headshot. 紅如 stares at the boy he abandoned. The young emperor turns to the camera and smiles, bewitchingly.

第四幕 逆亂 (Rebellion)
養生殿; the sect's councils
The emperor plans the suppression and sings the truth of himself: royal twins, good and evil, light and dark — the hidden spare stepping into the light. '現在讓我們來維持這個世界的秩序吧。' In the west, Lian and Hongru clash over attacking Yanjing: she fears the nuclear button — '任何會讓這個美麗的世界毀滅的東西都不應該小視' — he insists on the gamble. She runs away. He secretly sends Yanren to bring her back, and leads the assault himself.

第五幕 夜奔 (Night Flight)
The road; then the palace
焱刃 finds 蓮 and tells her the plain truth: 紅如 needs only a LIVING 蓮 — a vegetable would do. She finally understands that the man who raised her wants the Maitreya's identity, not her, and that the ten years of corrections were maintenance of an asset. She goes to the palace instead — and she and the emperor, the empire's two fourteen-year-old instruments, sing the same song: circumstances no one chooses, love that is not answered, and the wish to hurt the one who hurt you.

第六幕 青陽白陽 (Azure Sun, White Sun)
The siege of the Forbidden City; then the bare earth
As the faithful reach the walls, the emperor wheels Lian out of 永泰宮 — vegetative now; he too finds her more useful and safer that way. He legalizes the White Lotus on condition its Protector submits and serves at his side. Yanren assassinates Lian, then dies attempting the emperor a second time — '同樣的錯誤不能犯兩次。' Hongru abandons the religious cause for a class cause and withdraws with those still willing. The emperor: '他總有一天回來求我的。' Hongru decides the unjust Red Sun era deserves destruction rather than continuation — and uses the bomb. 2021: the bare, scoured earth enters the pure White Sun era.

A censor at the Board of Rites is ordered to produce the 'recovered crown prince' medical bulletin and notices the handwriting matches a 2006 stillbirth certificate. She has one day to decide which file to lose.
A guild auditor traces her chairman's 'merit donations' to a chartered rail manifest from coronation week, and must decide whether a family fortune is worth more than a name on a suppression list.
An altar-master asks the Holy Maiden what she actually wants — the first adult in ten years to ask. The answer, given after a long silence, begins the sect's quiet schism.
The warden of 落魂堂 is summoned to the capital to 'report on temple affairs.' He packs the ledger, a sword he has not worn in twenty years, and no defence.
焱刃 accepts one private commission between acts: identify the technique that let a center-forehead kill stand up and smile at a camera. His investigation is the audience's tour of every secret in the world.
Glossary
青陽 / 紅陽 / 白陽 — The Three Suns: the pure past era, the corrupt present era, the pure era to come — the White Lotus's reading of the Mandate's turning.
無生聖女 / 教主 — The Holy Maiden of the Unborn / sect leader — the office 蓮 has worn since she was four, and the reason no one has ever asked her a question she was allowed to answer freely.
上上師 — Supreme Grandmaster of the White Lotus — Hongru's rank; Protector (護法) is the office the throne will later offer to leash him with.
雲盤接詔 — The cloud-tray reception of edicts: a golden phoenix lowered from Tiananmen with the edict in its beak — Qing coronation ritual, performed live on every screen in 2020.
